Client

The Fredericksburg Area Museum

Role

Exhibit Designer / Visual Designer

Goal

To educate visitors on the natural and historical existence of LGBTQIA+ identities.

Process

We began with collaborative meetings and brainstorming sessions to initiate our research. Each team member then delved into their area of expertise, expanding or narrowing the scope based on historical content.

Approach

The design approach aimed to present a potentially contentious topic in a conservative area in a family-friendly, accessible manner for people of all backgrounds.

Project Description

An educational exhibit of LGBTQIA+ history spanning over 4000 years, with a focus on the last 200 years of local history within a global context. The exhibit highlights queer biology in the natural world, queer indigenous practices, and erased or forgotten local histories to convey that LGBTQ+ identities are natural and not new.
